Clarice
Cliff Collectors Club Member to Design
20th
Anniversary Poster !
We commemorate
TWENTY years of the club in 2002! It does not seem possible that we started
it with just 34 members back in 1982; much has happened since then so we
have a lot to celebrate. Members’ support, involvement and enthusiasm for
Clarice's pottery and the club have taken it from strength to strength,
and it has served as a model for many other ceramic clubs. |
We felt it
would be perfect for a club member to design the Commemorative
Poster. It must be in the upright ‘A4 proportion’ format, and will
incorporate the club logo and a title we create at the bottom: apart from
that YOU are the artist. You can create your artwork in oils, watercolours,
mixed media or completely computer generated. Please just make it colourful,
imaginative, commemorative, bold and very CLARICE !
(Once you
have completed your work please send either a photograph of it to the club
address, or e-mail it. We will select the one we feel most suitable. The
one selected wins a club Grotesque facemask worth £230 (with
a low edition number) and a cheque for £100. Entries needed by January
31st 2002. The rights to the artwork become the club's, but
your signature will be included on all or any variations

‘Clarice
Cliff Court’ Opening
Good
News in June The opening of
Clarice
Cliff Court at Staffordshire University has taken place. The Halls
within the complex are named after other major Staffordshire ceramicists,
Eve Midwinter, Charlotte Rhead, Millicent Taplin, Star Wedgwood, Rachel
Bishop and Jessie Tait. The latter two performed the opening ceremony,
giving a firm link with the past, Jessie Tait was designer at Midwinter
in the 60’s, and Rachel Bishop is a contemporary Moorcroft designer.
The cubist building has plaques featuring Clarice's Mondrian design,
above doors and between floors, and also in pavements and public areas.
A commemorative leaflet stated, ‘Staffordshire University is proud to have
Clarice
Cliff Court as a permanent reminder of the significant contributions
of these female designers.’ It also mentions ‘us’: ‘the Clarice Cliff
Collectors Club was set up in 1981 since when prices and interest have
escalated’. The
Court is on Lordship Lane, off Leek Road in Stoke

The August edition
of 'Collect It' featured a three page article by Leonard Griffin
reviewing the changes in Clarice collecting over two decades. |
| It
covered original pieces, the hand-painted Wedgwood ware from 1992,
and also the printed pieces. Illustrations include the new CCCC / Wedgwood
2001 Collection. Leonard commented that high prices since Centenary
year have NOT caused many collectors to part with pieces, and summed up
the current market situation: 'collector confidence in Clarice Cliff is
so strong they do not sell.' He predicted that 'Whatever happens, expect
more Clarice Cliff 'fireworks' she has not disappointed us once in 20 years!' |

The
Clarice Cliff Collectors Club REVIEW
With
the club's TWENTIETH anniversary celebrations now being planned,
we have looked at how we respond to the market and collectors and decided
to make the dates we issue the Review more flexible to fit with
club events and sales. So rather then ‘link’ the Review to a particular
month, we will be issuing the 3 editions as Autumn/Winter in October
/November, Spring, February/March, and Summer June/July.
This starts with the next Review following in late October. The
Review
and the Newsletters in-between should also enable us to give you
more upfront information as well as quicker coverage
BACK
COPIES:
If you are a new Clarice Cliff ‘devotee’ you may find the back copies of
our colour Review magazine very interesting. We sell Annual sets
from 1999 to 2000 in our Age
of Jazz Store. |
