The
Clarice Cliff Collectors Club
Welcome
to our March ’2001
Internet Newsletter.
The
biggest news recently
was when Clarice Cliff was voted as ‘Woman of The Century ‘ by readers
of the
Sentinel in Stoke-on-Trent! They published the results of
a reader's survey where Clarice topped the entire poll. The ‘Man
of the Century’ was (fittingly) Reginald Mitchell who invented the Spitfire
fighter.
Never
accorded any professional, or royal honour in her lifetime, this accolade
is very fitting and shows that at last the people of the Potteries have
acknowledged Clarice Cliff for her unique talents. Thanks to all members
of The Clarice Cliff Collectors Club whose passion from 1982
onwards for Clarice's work has helped achieve this. As I wrote at the end
of Art of Bizarre, ‘Her ware was not just Bizarre
it was magnificent. She conquered the world, and now she is returning home
for good.’ She has.

We
are
equally delighted that Rene Dale and Jim Hall, two of Clarice's former
workers, were featured in the ‘Grey Power’ column of the Sentinel recently.
Rene is STILL painting pottery by hand. See the full story on our site.

The
latest edition of The Clarice Cliff Collectors Club Review has just
been published. At 28 pages, with colour and lots of news it is a must
for serious devotes and we publish three each year. Stores include features
on archive watercolours, fabulous pieces of House and Bridge, Pink Roof
Cottage and other, and the second part of our interview in Canada with
Colley’s daughter Joan, about life with Clarice and Colley in the 40’s
50;s and 60s. New Zealand readers will be interested to see a story on
a local collector who was actually related to Clarice Cliff!
The
Review
also has a major feature 'Alice in Africa',
about Bizarre ‘girls’ Alice Andrew's trip to South Africa recently. At
85 years of age Alice toured with a local collector and a CCCC member from
Wales who was her companion. She did a tour of antique shops, signed autographs
for locals devotes delighted to meet a REAL Clarice Cliff paintress, and
whilst she was there a new locally inspired design Union Buildings
was discovered!
The
Review
also has critiques of the Clarice Cliff drama by Lizzie Slater on Radio
4. Who better to comment on ‘The Bizarre Girl’ than A Bizarre ‘girl’,
Edna Cheetham? A vibrant, young at heart lady, giving her honest opinions
of the drama.

We
revealed that TWO writers are currently working on biographies of the life
of Clarice. 'Hot on the heels' of the Radio 4 Drama it is going
to lead to even more interest and awareness of her work. We were approached
back in 2000 by both writers, but decided to help the one who has been
a member of The
Clarice Cliff Collectors Club
for many years, as it was clearly a ‘labour of love’ and she already had
some exciting, focussed ideas.

section of the market for sales, so at the good paperback price of £14.99
it will enable a lot more people to discover Clarice's work, or
students to study it. Several events are planned, one will be in Nottingham
on May 23rd, a chance for Midlands's members to get together
for a ‘Clarice Evening’
