Sale report, results and analysis
by CCCC reporter Doreen Mann
(This is just a 'taster', one of FIVE features about our Convention weekend - to see all these and a lot more why not join the CCCC?)
The much anticipated Fieldings/CCCC first sale proved to be an outstanding success for all concerned. The hard work put in by Will Farmer and his team certainly hit the right spot with CCCC members and new buyers alike as there was truly “something for everyone”. This was illustrated with estimates ranging from £30 to £7,000, a very broad canvas.
A brand new auction catalogue format with condition reports made it a refreshing and informative approach.
The division of the lots into 'Landscapes & Cottages', 'Abstract & Geometric', 'Fruit & Florals', and 'Having a little fun at my work' was a fabulous and original concept! The added incentive of the ‘Clarice in Context’ exhibition, also staged by Fieldings, made it a truly superb weekend.
THE SALE (all prices are hammer)
Of the 267 lots offered, 41 lots were priced at under £100; 79 between £100-£250 inclusive, and 45 lots from the £250-£500 price range, a broad spectrum that was enthusiastically received by bidders.
We know from previous research that club members, 'Cliffies' are 'happiest' within this under £500 price range, although many will go further to £1,000 plus for favoured items.
There was a good selection of “high end” items/price estimates. The wide-ranging estimates whet the appetite of several bidders new to Clarice Cliff and I hope this less elitist approach continues, as we all too often see young aspiring Cliff design fans ‘putting up with’ reproduction pieces.
The Top 5 prices realised were:
Joint 1. A Diamonds Early Morning set and the Gibraltar 358 vase at £2,800.
3. Sliced Circle Tonquin shape Water Jug and Bowl at £2,600.
4. Red Autumn Lotus at £2,500, and
5. Gibraltar 383 Conical bowl at £2,000.
All prices quoted are hammer prices.
Incidentally, the top 25 highest sold lots were priced between £540 and £2,800, and there was a great selection of every shape imaginable whether it was vases, tea/coffee pots and part sets, preserve pots, plates, cruet sets, jugs, toast racks, etc.
A delightful aspect to this sale was a superb collection of napkin rings, again broad-ranging in patterns which enticed many would-be buyers.
All in all, a very successful sale with 70% sold, and long may this broad canvas and fantastic atmosphere continue in our new relationship with Fieldings.
