The Lido Lady sold
in the February 25th Barry Jones sale at Christie's made an amazing £6500!
(hammer). Just about every one in the Clarice Cliff world was stunned,
and this six inch high figurine is pictured.
The shape was also called a 561. A little
known fact is that as well as this figure, Clarice also made a smaller
version of the lady standing on a circular ashtray. This must have been
less than three inches high, fifteen centimetres high. We have never seen
one of these, and wondered if a member of the C.C.C.C or a visitor to claricecliff.com
might have one? The only known reference to it is the original shape sheets
as shown below.
The evidence of existing pieces suggests
the Lido Lady was issued only briefly, probably in 1931 and 1932. She is
known in versions with orange or blue spots, and with the trousers in Blue
Chintz or Orange Chintz. Clarice was obviously proud of her as an original
archive photograph shows her on a mirrored table in a very 'Deco' style.

A visitor to our site has noted that the
Lido Lady in the sale was first sold for £680 in 1991, so the increase
in value to £6500 in nine years may be a record for any kind for
ceramic figure?
We
always felt the Lido Lady was one of Clarice's best pieces, which is why
we reproduced it as part of our 1999 Centenary year ware. The exclusive
C.C.C.C. orange and blue colourways are now nearly sold out, but the 'Internet
only' colourway in 'Secrets' greens and yellow, is still available from
the CC Store. She is £5340 less than the real thing!
