The Fantastic story of the Eton coffeepot

When I purchased this from a London auction in 1997 I was surprised to find that the saleroom had not removed a label on the base with the owner’s address on! Naturally, I wrote to them to see if it had a provenance.

Rosemary, the daughter of the original owner wrote me this delightful, informative letter. Suddenly a coffeepot bought in 1997 had a full history, right back to the store it had been sold from in 1932.

Dear Mr. Griffin

Clarice Cliff springs surprise upon surprise. First the Antiques Roadshow, then Bonham’s interest when we submitted the coffeepot to them, then seeing it displayed resplendently on the cover of their catalogue, then the staggering price, and now your unexpected letter which added to all the pleasure we have gained.

We have your book ‘Taking Tea’ sent by my cousin’s son who saw it in Weymouth. I have noticed on page 102, Rhodanthe. We had a three-foot high vase with that design. It must have been top heavy, tapered to the base, as one day it crashed down from the sideboard seemingly of its own accord, much to our regret then and now.

My father was the china buyer for the department store Bladon’s of Hull when he lived there 65 years ago (1932) Dad must have bought the Clarice then.

I have used the coffeepot on occasions, it has seen seven house moves. Must have been wrapped well for travelling (Pickford’s!) three in Coventry surviving the blitz. The likely year of manufacture is 1932 but I don’t know what price dad paid. Could I but tell my parents the value they would indeed think it ‘Fantas(ti)que’!

Thank you for saying you will treasure the coffeepot, it has gone to a good home. I did hope, walking away at the sale, it wouldn’t feel abandoned, good to know of your regard.

Rosemary

Provenance adds value to any antique or collectible, so always check to see if something you bought has a traceable history, it adds to its charm as well as its value.
