PREVIEW
& RESULTS FROM CHRISTIE'S
The
first major Clarice auction for 2001 is at Christie's
, South Kensington. The sale has an impressive variety of shapes and
designs. Please click the Thumbnail pictures for a larger view.

|
A real rarity in the
sale is a Daffodil shape Early Morning set in Coastal Oak.
The simply drawn landscape with detailed trees and lining style of decoration
appeared in 1933. |
|
We
have seen the Subway Sadie comport (part of the Joan Shorter ‘From
a Child, to a Child’ ware) offered in recent years, but Christie's
have a version made as a sugar dredger. It is the first noted for many
years.

Smaller pieces in
rare designs often attract much attention so watch the Green House
vase. The largest piece is a stunning Clouvre umbrella stand. Few
were produced as they took up so much space in the kilns so they were almost
invariably made for tradeshows and then sold on. |
|
Geometric collectors
will like a stunning Conical bowl variation, shape 381 in Diamonds.
There is also an early Conical
bowl in Football. One lot unusually has a pair of Cauldron
shapes in Mountain presumably bought this way back in 1932? It's
easy to forget that people often bought pairs of things to display on their
mantelpiece. |

|
|
If you seek an example
of the rare Blue Crocus design there is a Bon Jour
coffee-pot and teapot in the sale. |
|
| For collectors of
unusual pieces there is an advertising bowl and a lamp base which is a
version of the 366 vase from 1928, specially modelled as a lamp base.
The sale has FOUR of the impressive
shape 37 vases.
|
|
| Other pieces that caught
our eye were a Lotus jug in Blue W and a shape 358
vase in Sunrise Orange. |
|
|
There is a part Apples
coffee set, both tea and coffee war are rare in this sought after 1931
design. |
|
Collectors
of Conical jugs have several good ones to choose from, Trees
and House, Bobbins on a Café-au-Lait ground, and one
in Appliqué Avignon‘ with the full design!
A
simple plate in Blue Firs will probably attract lot of bids,
although you could get just as much colour at a cheaper price if you bought
the 1931 Fantasque Autumn plate which has non-standard blue
and yellow banding.

We
recommend you allow at least THREE hours to view. If you see friends there
it is easy to get distracted and later during the sale, when a ‘bargain’
goes through, think ’why did I not see that?’ !
Make a ‘bidding
plan’ and stick to it, your favourite piece is PROBABLY the favourite of
at least ten other bidders, so check many pieces, research rarity and value,
and you might get a bargain. There are always ‘good buys’ !
Christie's
have a Sunday Preview on May 20th from 1 to 4pm.
|
| As well as a chance
to see and handle the ware (a great learning process) there is will be
a few Surprises on the day, including a display of Dame Laura Knight Circus
ceramics, and original artwork for this ‘Artist in Industry’ ware , and
other pieces from this series. These are to be auctioned later this year,
and the set include a PAIR of the rare, impressive lamp bases. |
